The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the assessment of a $15.45 million civil penalty against an importer of dehumidifiers. While the importer did not admit liability they settled with the CPSC for this record amount. The CPSC alleged that the dehumidifiers were a fire hazard and that the importer failed to report their knowledge of the defect to the CPSC in a timely fashion.
The CPSC has broad oversight over imported products and has been much more active in enforcement actions recently. The CPSC now has their own inspectors in some of the larger ports of entry and those inspectors are actively looking for products that are in violation of CPSC safety rules and regulations.
Importers are strongly encouraged to work with their suppliers to ensure that the products they import meet CPSC standards. Further information about the CPSC import safety regulations please visit their website at www.cpsc.gov or contact us at email@example.com.
